The band is made of a rubber-like product with parallel grooves; it looks very dressy for being as sturdy as it is. The buckle is stainless steel with a double catch; it's easy to open when you want to but doesn't fly open on its own.The band has plenty of adjustment for smaller wrists like mine. You do need to cut off unused links to make the adjustment, but a sturdy pair of scissors did the job just fine. I was careful to trim the links one at a time until I got a good fit, as cutting off a link is a non-reversible operation. If you aren't comfortable doing this yourself, I'm sure that a good jewelry store would do it for you.
